Interview Question
What is a Posting Date in SAP FICO?
Answer
A Posting Date is the date on which a financial transaction is recorded in SAP and impacts the accounting books.
SAP uses the Posting Date to determine:
• Fiscal Year
• Posting Period
• Financial Reports
The Posting Date is one of the most important fields during document posting.
Real-Time Example
A vendor invoice is received on 05-June-2026 and entered into SAP on the same day.
• Document Date = 05-June-2026
• Posting Date = 05-June-2026
SAP records the transaction in the June accounting period.
If the accountant enters the invoice on 02-July-2026 but wants it to affect June accounts, the Posting Date can be given as 30-June-2026 (if the June period is still open).
This ensures the expense is reflected in the correct financial period.
